A bibliography maker for students in the EU and US: enter your references — author, year, title, source — pick APA, MLA, Chicago or Harvard, watch the formatted list preview live, and download a clean, numbered bibliography PDF. Free, no signup, built entirely on your device. The tool starts with two sample references so the format is visible immediately.
Take the entry author "Smith, J.", year "2024", title "How students organise digital study notes", source "Journal of Learning Technology". In APA it reads: Smith, J. (2024). How students organise digital study notes. Journal of Learning Technology. In MLA the same entry becomes: Smith, J. "How students organise digital study notes." Journal of Learning Technology, 2024. Chicago and Harvard each reorder the same four facts again — same source, different punctuation and order. That is the entire skill of referencing: the facts never change, the presentation follows the style. The tool handles the presentation; you remain responsible for the facts, which is why every entry should be checked against the original source before submission. For essays, our word counter for essays checks length and reading time in the same private, in-browser way.
APA is currently in its 7th edition (published 2019) and MLA in its 9th edition (2021): when a style updates, rules for DOIs, URLs, author counts and capitalisation change with it, and markers notice. That is why this tool formats the core pattern and reminds you to check your institution's guide: a bibliography that follows a superseded edition can lose marks even when every source is real. Note the portal framing too: named portals such as uni-assist, UCAS, Studielink and Campus France are mentioned on this site only as use cases for document preparation — never as a claim about their official requirements, which you must always read on the portal itself.
Every in-text citation needs a matching bibliography entry, and every entry should be cited in the text. Orphan entries and missing entries are the two most common referencing penalties.
Author names, titles and journal names must match the original source character for character. A mistyped author name is a failed source check, not a typo.
For a website with no named author, use the organisation as author and put the site name or URL in the source field. Most styles also want a retrieval or access date — add it to the source field.
Download the bibliography PDF and merge it with your essay before submission, so the reference list travels with the work it belongs to — never as a separate loose file.
Styles have detailed rules for edited volumes, chapters, DOIs, multiple authors and translated works. This tool formats the standard journal/book/website pattern; check your institution's guide for edge cases.
The PDF uses a standard font, so italics for journal titles are not rendered and exotic scripts are simplified. If your institution requires italics, treat this PDF as a draft and finalise formatting in your word processor.
The tool formats what you type; it cannot verify that a source exists or that a year is right. Check each entry against the original before submitting.
It turns your reference entries — author, year, title and source — into a clean, numbered bibliography PDF formatted in APA, MLA, Chicago or Harvard style, with a live preview as you type.

Yes — always. Citation styles have edition-specific details (capitalisation, italics, DOIs) that vary by institution. This tool formats the core pattern correctly; your institution's guide is the final authority.
Yes — it pairs with our thesis tools: add page numbers for your thesis, merge your chapters and references into one PDF, and compress the final file for your university portal.
Only in this browser tab while you type. The PDF is assembled on your own device with a JavaScript PDF library — your references are never uploaded to any server.
Enter the site or organisation as the author where no person is named, and put the site name or URL in the source field. For online sources, most styles also want a retrieval date — add it to the source field.
