How to edit PDF metadata in 3 steps

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above. The tool instantly reads the embedded properties — title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates — and shows what's actually in the file (some fields that look blank in a viewer are populated).
  2. Edit the fields. Fix the title, set the author, add keywords. Leave a field empty to clear it — or hit "Clear all fields" to strip everything editable at once.
  3. Save & download. The updated PDF downloads immediately with the new properties embedded. The pages, text and layout are untouched — only the hidden properties changed.

Why metadata matters

🔍 Searchability & SEO

Search engines and document systems read PDF titles and keywords. A report titled "Q3 2026 Financial Report — Acme Ltd" is found; one titled "Microsoft Word — Document1" is invisible. Set meaningful metadata before publishing anything.

🗂️ Professional document libraries

Consistent titles, authors and keywords turn a chaotic folder of "scan_0042.pdf" files into an organized, searchable archive. Batch your renaming workflow: title first, keywords second.

🕵️ Privacy before sharing

Author fields frequently carry your username or full name — check what's embedded before sending a file externally. For client-facing invoices, pair this with our invoice generator and set clean attribution.

📜 Compliance & traceability

Regulated industries need reliable document properties: correct titles, version info in keywords, accurate authorship. Fix them in seconds without touching the content or buying Acrobat.

🧹 Strip it completely

Need everything gone — including data this editor can't reach? Our Remove PDF Metadata tool sanitizes the file in one click.

✅ Verify your own work

Run any PDF through this tool just to read it — a 10-second audit that shows exactly what you'd be handing to a client, a publisher, or a court.

Straight talk: limits

📄 Content is untouched

This tool edits document properties only. It cannot change text, images, layout, or remove pages — use the dedicated editors for that.

🏭 Producer is re-stamped

The Producer field is rewritten by the PDF engine when the file is saved — that's standard behavior in every PDF tool, including Adobe's. Everything else you set stays exactly as you typed it.

🔐 Encrypted PDFs

Password-protected files must be unlocked first — metadata inside encrypted files can't be read without the password.

📦 XMP metadata

Some files carry a second, XML-based metadata packet (XMP) alongside the classic properties. This editor handles the classic fields; use Remove PDF Metadata for full sanitization including XMP.

Edit PDF Metadata FAQ

What is PDF metadata?

PDF metadata is hidden information stored inside a PDF file: the document title, author, subject, keywords, the software that created it (Creator), and the software that produced the PDF (Producer), plus creation and modification dates. It is invisible on the pages but visible to search engines, file managers, document systems — and anyone you share the file with.

Why would I edit PDF metadata?

Common reasons: fix a meaningless title like 'Microsoft Word — Document1' before publishing, set correct author attribution on reports and invoices, add keywords so documents are findable, remove your personal name before sharing externally, and keep document libraries consistent and professional.

Does editing metadata change the PDF content?

No. Metadata editing only changes the hidden document properties. The text, images, layout, fonts and page count of your PDF remain exactly the same — only the 'document properties' panel and what search engines see will change.

Is my document uploaded when I edit its metadata here?

Never. All metadata reading and writing happens locally in your browser using a JavaScript PDF library. Your file stays on your device from start to finish — verify it in the Network tab if you like. That makes this the safe way to inspect metadata on confidential documents.

Can I remove all metadata instead of editing it?

Yes — click 'Clear all fields' and save, and every editable field is emptied. (The Producer field is rewritten by the PDF engine on save; the tool notes this.) For one-click complete sanitization including XMP data, use our dedicated Remove PDF Metadata tool.

What's the difference between Creator and Producer?

The Creator field records which application originally authored the document (e.g. Microsoft Word); the Producer field records which software converted it to PDF (e.g. the PDF library). Both are editable here, though Producer is re-stamped by the engine when the file is saved.

Does editing metadata work on scanned PDFs and on phones?

Yes on both. Metadata lives in the file header, not in the page content, so scanned PDFs edit exactly like born-digital ones. And the tool runs in any modern browser, including Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android.
