Got a European A4 document that must print on US Letter paper, or an American Letter file for a European office? Drop your PDF below, pick the target size, and download a resized copy in seconds — content scaled to fit, nothing cut off. It is free, unlimited and watermark-free — and it runs 100% in your browser, so your file is never uploaded anywhere.
Scaling is proportional: the whole original page shrinks or grows to fit the new page, centred, with even margins. Nothing is cropped off the edges — an A4 page converted to US Letter gets slightly smaller content with a little extra side margin, and vice versa.
Quick answer: A4 (210 × 297 mm, defined by ISO 216) is the standard paper size across Europe and most of the world, while US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches, defined by ANSI/ASME Y14.1) is the standard in the United States and Canada. The two are close but not identical: Letter is slightly wider and shorter than A4, so a document laid out for one prints with clipped margins or awkward scaling on the other. This tool re-pages every page of your PDF to the size you pick, scaling content proportionally so nothing is cut off.
Where does this actually bite? A European freelancer sends an A4 invoice to a US client who prints it and loses the right margin. An American student submits a Letter-sized essay to a German university portal that expects A4. A company prints a US Legal contract on European printers that don't stock Legal at all. In each case the content is fine — only the page box is wrong — and the fix is a thirty-second conversion, not a rebuild of the document. The same mismatch hits booklets: A5 (148 × 210 mm, exactly half of A4) is the natural size for printed booklets, which is why this tool offers it alongside our booklet maker.
One honest limit: proportional scaling means the content gets slightly smaller when moving to a smaller page (A4 → A5 shrinks a lot; A4 → Letter barely changes). Text stays sharp because PDFs are vector-based — scaling doesn't blur like resizing a photo — but tiny footnotes on an A4 original can become hard to read at A5. Check the first page of the download before printing fifty copies. For files that also need shrinking in bytes, run the result through our compress tool afterwards.
210 × 297 mm. The default for invoices, CVs, university submissions and business letters outside North America. If your recipient is in the EU or UK, A4 is almost always right.
8.5 × 11 inches. The default for resumes, school work and business documents in North America. Sending A4 to a US office risks clipped printing — convert first.
8.5 × 14 inches. Used for some US legal documents and contracts. Only pick Legal when the recipient explicitly asks for it — most printers outside the US don't stock it.
148 × 210 mm, exactly half of A4. Great for event programmes, mini-guides and booklet interiors — pair with our booklet maker for folded printing.
Page-size conversion sounds trivial, which is exactly why server tools treat your file casually: upload, convert, “deleted in an hour”, backups included. But the file being converted is often the sensitive one — a contract, an invoice, a thesis — and uploading it to fix a margin problem is a bad trade. This tool embeds your original pages into a new PDF entirely on your device, using the same pdf-lib engine our other tools use. Open the Network tab and check: no upload happens, ever. Our safety guide lays out the difference between browser-only and server tools.
The other advantage is speed: no queue, no “2 free tasks a day” wall, no account. Convert ten files in a row if you need to — the tool doesn't count, because there's nothing to count. If your file is password-protected, unlock it first with our unlock tool, then convert.
Yes — unlimited conversions, any page count, PDF download, forever. No trial, no watermark, no account, no payment details. It runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to meter.
No. Content is scaled proportionally to fit the new page and centred, so nothing is cut off. A4 to Letter is a small change — content shrinks slightly with a little extra side margin.
A4 is 210 × 297 mm under ISO 216 and is standard across Europe and most of the world. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches and is standard in the USA and Canada. Letter is slightly wider and shorter than A4, which is why margins clip when you print one on the other's paper.
Barely. The content is reused, not re-rendered, so the output is roughly the same size as the input. If you also need a smaller file in bytes, run the result through our compress tool.
Not directly — the browser engine cannot open an encrypted file without the password. Unlock it first with our free unlock tool, then convert the unlocked copy.
Yes. Pages are converted in their original order, one by one. If you also need to reorder pages, use our reorder tool before or after converting.
Only on your own device, in this browser tab. The file is never uploaded to any server — verify it in the Network tab if you like.
