Need proof that rent was paid? Fill in the landlord, tenant, property and amount below and download a clean rent receipt PDF in seconds. It is free, unlimited and watermark-free — and it is built on your own device, so tenant and payment details are never uploaded anywhere. A rent receipt is the tenant's proof of payment and the landlord's record: keep one for every month, and disputes about “was it paid?” disappear.
Quick answer: A rent receipt is a short written acknowledgement that a tenant paid rent for a stated period, signed or issued by the landlord. Tenants need it as proof for tax returns, housing-benefit claims, visa files and deposit disputes; landlords need it as a clean payment record. In France, tenants can ask for a rent receipt (quittance de loyer) free of charge — Article 21 of Law No. 89-462 of 6 July 1989 says so — and similar proof-of-payment habits apply across Europe and the US, even where no single law mandates the format.
Without a receipt, a bank statement is all either side has — and a bank line rarely says which month it covered or what it included. A receipt names the property, the period and the amount, so a year later nobody argues about whether October was paid or whether utilities were included. Our general receipt maker covers one-off payments; this tool is built for rent specifically, with period and property fields included. Pair it with our invoice generator if you also bill tenants for extras.
Always name the property and the exact month the payment covers. “€850 received” proves nothing without a period attached.
Issue a receipt for each month, numbered in sequence (RR-2026-001, RR-2026-002). A gap in the sequence is a question at deposit time.
Use the note line for “including utilities” or “rent only”. Surprises at year end almost always come from an unclear amount.
The generated PDF leaves a signature line for the landlord. A signed receipt beats an unsigned one in any dispute — sign it before sending.
Rent receipts contain tenant names, home addresses and payment amounts — exactly the data you least want on someone else's server. Server-based generators receive all of it and store it under their retention policy. This tool assembles the PDF with JavaScript on your own device — open the Network tab and verify it yourself: no upload happens. That is the same privacy promise behind our safety guide, which explains the upload-vs-browser difference in plain terms.
The honest trade-off: because nothing is stored for you, the form clears if you refresh — so download the PDF before leaving the page, and file it with your tenancy records. That is the entire cost of keeping tenant financial data off the internet.
Landlord and tenant names, the property address, the rent period covered, the amount and currency, the payment date and method, and a receipt number. A signature line for the landlord makes it stronger as proof.
It depends on the country and tenancy. In France, a tenant can demand one free of charge. Elsewhere it may not be legally required, but it is still the simplest proof of payment for tax, benefit and deposit purposes — check your local tenancy rules.
